STORY / GAMEPLAY As a skilled pilot you are called in destroying the ultimate weapon of the enemy. The game involves travelling through a set of precarious tunnels by navigating your high-tech hovercraft. But you must always be alerted as the tunnels are swarmed by enemy forces (alien vehicles, choppers and sentry guns). It will be you call to take out those buggies or just avoid engaging. You can upgrade your firepower and make your hover-craft an ultimate killing machine. Note that, apart from the enemies there are a lot of sections that require clearing at a given time limit. Playability is the only weak point of this game since there is no cockpit or external view. Instead, you're just presented with the track and there's no point of reference. There's nothing to help you determine where the side of your craft is and this makes it hard to navigate and determine distance. More on that, you do not know where your guns aiming at, meaning that accurate gunplay is almost impossible (there no bullet trails either). Weak points and Descent games aside, Tunnel B1 is an odd and great game to try.
GRAPHICS / SOUND Apart from its tricky gameplay and lousy controls, the game looks fantastic. The objects are highly detailed and the explosions are very satisfying featuring light-sourcing, texture-mapping and faux transparencies in a fully polygonal environment, all running at around 30fps. Notice when overhead lamps and gunfire light-up towering brick walls as you unleash your missiles at the nearest enemy. Do not forget the crystal clear FMV intro of Acclaim's logo followed by Ocean's amusing logo sequence and the game's story. Now, the sound on the Saturn is top notch, from the CD audio music tracks that accompany the action to the awesome sound effects. It must absolutely noted that the music scores in Tunnel B1 were written and composed by the popular in gaming history, musician Chris Hulsbeck (the man behind some fantastic tunes in games like Turrican, Turrican II, etc).
